Gundog Digest - Winter 2007
Much more to come from Keith Erlandson this winter.
Run Rabbit Run, The Wind on the Heath and Other Spaniel Breeds.

With the new UK Law in force on docking working dogs tails this year, I will predict a drastic drop in the numbers of Springers registered with our Kennel Club. Maybe 50% or less, compared to the past ten years. Ed.

   English Spaniel Origins
English Spaniels - 1899

A beautiful old picture of Spaniel life in England, circa 1899. From a painting by Miss Maud Earl and at the time, the property of one, William Arkwright. We are happy to be able to give and show this picture on the Web in 2005. It is a beautiful 'snap shot' of life with Spaniels in England in 1899 and should enthrall and excite the keen Spaniel owner, the world over.
My own impression is, how little our beautiful Spaniels have changed in over 100 years. This must be a great credit to good breeding and desire on the part of keen working UK Spaniel breeders over the past 100 and more years. The exception being the Clumbers in the foreground. They show what working Clumbers were like 100 years ago. Their popularity fell by the wayside and the 'show people' got hold of them. They then ended up at twice the size and weight but fortunately, keen current day working Clumber owners are resurrecting the breed, back to it's proper form. Ed
